Summer Activities for Children and Families

With the summer holidays well underway, it can sometimes be difficult to find things for kids and families to do. Thankfully, we’ve got you covered! Whether you’re looking for things your children can do while you’re at work or that families can do together, Cardiff Council and partners have so much on offer over the next month.

Cardiff Playday

The National Day of Play is celebrated across the UK every August, highlighting children’s right to play and the importance of play in children’s lives.  The theme of this year’s day is the culture of childhood – supporting play, fun and friendships.

Organised by the Council’s Children’s Play Services, stacks of outdoor fun is on the cards for children and families at Heath Park on Wednesday August 7, 1 – 4pm when a range of council services and partners will be delivering games, storytelling, sports, arts and crafts and more, all at no cost to families! Join in the fun at the field near the mini railway at the park.

Summer Reading Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge is a FREE holiday activity for children. It’s all about reading for fun, aiming to improve children’s reading skills and confidence. The Challenge runs every year throughout the summer holidays, and all children aged 4-11 are welcome to take part.

This year’s Challenge theme, Marvellous Makers, is all about creativity. From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, there’s something for everyone! Children will be able to find new reads linked to their favourite creative arts, and access free activities at the library.

You can sign up at your local library or online at summerreadingchallenge.org.uk. Start today!

Hub Activities and Clubs

As always, Cardiff Hubs are running events for children and adults. Whether your child likes Lego, treasure hunts, storytelling, singing or crafts there’s something for you to come and get involved with. Check the schedule for your local hub at cardiffhubs.co.uk. Some hubs also have Facebook, X/Twitter and Instagram pages, and there’s frequent updates on what’s going on in the area on those.

This is just a small selection, and there’s always new things being announced. Cardiff Council wants to make your summer fun, creative and fulfilling, for more information, pop into your local hub and have a chat with one of the team!
